Anti attention-crash tools by Steve Rubel

Steve Rubel is a digital marketer with over 15 years experience. He is also a well known blogger for his own weblog Micro Persuasion. With www.micropersuasion.com Steve explores the impact of digital trends on business, culture, media and marketing. Recently he wrote a very interesting piece called "Three Ways to Mitigate the Attention Crash, Yet Still Feel Informed". In this blogpost he writes about skills: "One of the most important skills executives need today is the know-how to manage and harness their personal information flow". Below are three of his best tips on how to stay informed and avoid getting an attention crash at the same time.

Tool 1: Inbox Zero

Inbox Zero is all about managing your inbox. "Blogger Merlin Mann has created a simple way to effectively manage email. His approach involves setting aside blocks of time for “email dashes,” quickly triaging messages and automating some of the processes with search folders – a powerful Outlook feature that most never use". Want to know more? Check out the video.

Tool 2: Invest in Search

"When in doubt, let search tools - either on your desktop or online - do the work for you. The time you invest to set up these systems can pay huge dividends".

Great aspect of google reader is that its free, very easy to use and fairly effective in finding just that email or document you just know you have on your computer somewhere. Steve Rubel even states that it acts as a personal database. Check out the google reader here.

Tool 3: Make Unusable Time Usable

Steve Rubel mentiones on his blog that he reads a lot. There are so many interesting "must reads" out there but often too little time to read them. Steve Rubel has found a perfectly simple and efficient way to solve this dilemma. "I have mastered how to stuff it into pockets of time that are normally “unusable". I get through about one business book a week by listening to them when I commute, travel and run errands".

These are just a few of many interesting tips by Steve Rubel. For more workhacks, or as he calles them “lifehacks”, check out his bookmarks.
